Deconstructing Natural dyes as Painting Material

Exploring the dichotomy within the traditions of western painting and ancestral textiles in Kristianne's Philippine heritage, she deconstructs natural dyes as a painting medium. By boiling cochineal and combining with salts and minerals, she reproduces an old alchemic technique discovered in the 1500s. The history of this cochineal dye has brought her to an intersection with science and world history. Spain's 300 year colonization in the Philippines brought a new world of religion, culture, language, and color. This medieval color with its rich history was brought into the Philippines and since then travelled into Europe and the rest of Asia.
